Bands Split Up

We don’t only need the Internet to keep us amused, there’s still an analogue world out there. Make use of two rubber bands for a simple but effective mind bender.

Guide lines
Ready, Steady, Go!

Find two rubber bands that look exactly the same. You might need to try a few sizes to ensure the correct band movements.

Before you call someone over to show it to, place one rubber band in your palm, out of site. Keep both hands looking the same, so it doesn’t look like you’re holding something in one of your palms.

Lend me your ears

You:

Hey, do you think it’s possible for me to split this rubber band into two pieces without breaking it? Before you answer, the answer is yes.

Show them the rubber band splitting technique by positioning your fingers as per the video. You should get a small smile, as they’ll think that’s the whole story.

Seal the Deal and Reveal

You:

But with a bit of effort, I can split it even more by doing this…

With a bit of flourish, drop the rubber band you’re working with together with the unseen band in your palm – both at the same time.

It’ll look like you’ve split the one rubber band into two rubber bands.

Some extra lines you can try

  • I’ve got two favourite bands, and there they are.
  • Splitting bands is so much better than splitting hairs with people.
  • I’m no musician, but I play with a rubber band.
Alternative ending

Teach them to try it for themselves, it takes a little bit of practice. They can now impress their colleagues, friends and family.

Do you need to prepare much for this?

Well, I had to stretch a bit to warm up.

Can that work with hair ties?

Probably. It does demonstrate the principles of elasticity.

Can you do this with 3 rubber bands?

That would be a stretch goal.
