5 maxims for making sure luck is with you

Nov 19, 2015 by Ronnie Apteker

No matter how hard you work, how good you are, how smart you are, luck always plays a role in everything you do. In work, in health and in love. Without luck all bets are off.

There is luck that comes from above, and it is unexplainable. And then there is luck which we can influence. Being kind, in my view, makes you luckier. Being a misery generally seems to attract further misery, and there is no luck in that.

Gary Player once said that the more you practice the luckier you get. Yes, luck certainly does favour the persistent. There is no substitute in life for hard work. People who work hard generally are luckier than people who are lazy.

Bob Metcalfe, who founded the tech company 3Com, once said "I didn’t make money from inventing the Ethernet; I made money from waking up early in cheap hotels rooms all around the world."

I could go on and on, quoting many famous people, who all said similar things. I like these quotes. They are spot on. Mr. Metcalfe’s comment in particular – he had to make the luck happen. Creating the Ethernet computer network was not enough. He still had to knock on doors and turn over every stone he could find. Knocking on doors makes you luckier – that I have learned over the past 30 years.

One last quote, because I can’t help myself. Einstein once remarked, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." He persisted and persisted and persisted.

Never give up! Luck is about the long haul.

I have many mentors, and my one champion Paul has often reminded me that the best way to receive is to give. Attitude, in my view, has a lot to do with luck. People who are generous in spirit generally seem to have better luck.

To be luckier one has to work harder and to do that we need time. To make time we need to say “no” more often. And we need to always remember to say “no” gracefully. People who are rude and dismissive tend to have less luck – that is what I have observed in life. Of course, sometimes real assholes are some of the luckiest people in the world, but I can’t explain that. I know that if you look after people, and have a good attitude, then luck generally shines on you more.

Knowing where to dig

The thing about luck is being able to recognize it when it hits. Stop staring at your phone and smell the roses. If you are digging for oil then find out if the area you are in is known to have oil. If you dig for oil in a place where there is no oil then you will never have any luck. So, when you know something and you ignore it, then that is bad luck. And conversely, if you try take a product to market in a place where there is demand, well, then, you are in a with a chance. Luck is all about having a chance to win. And the more you try, the closer you will get to your realize your goal.

Know where to dig for oil – it will spare you a lot of heartache.

The American industrialist J. Paul Getty once said the secret to success was: "You wake up early, you work hard, and you find oil." He hit the jackpot! Tomorrow you could get up in the morning, and find gold in your back yard, and the rest will be history. Of course, the more you dig, the more you have a chance to find the glory at the end of the rainbow. But one thing is for sure, if you dig for oil in the wrong place you are not going to find it.

Buying a ticket

If you don’t buy a lottery ticket you can never win. And that is luck in its purest sense. Of course, without a ticket you don’t stand a chance. You have to be in the game.

All business is about winning and losing. An entrepreneur who has never had a setback or a loss is simply just a lucky son of a gun. All of life's journeys are about climbing mountains, and more often than not, falling down. Those who get back up and keep climbing often get to the summit. The key to all of this is to remember to laugh. Taking your work seriously is one thing, but taking yourself too seriously is not good for your health! People who laugh tend to be luckier.

Stay in the ring – don’t give up. You have to be there to win.

Spread some joy

Have fun, make people smile, spread some love. That always helps attract good luck. Of course, there is no guarantee that if you do everything right that luck will fall from the sky, but, it really does help.

Try breaking the ice with people. Warm up some rooms, and get people talking and thinking and smiling. People love good stimulation so give The Finger a try, or, hit them with a Sweet Prediction. You could even show them your Little Friend. All of these have brought me luck – they may work for you too.

Summing up

Sometimes the world is not fair, and that is life. It is not easy to explain why some people have luck while others don’t. But one thing is for sure, if you are nice to people you will tend to be luckier. Being nice is good. And it is good for business.

If you want to get luckier then be sincere. Labours of love are most often blessed with luck. Also, keep your promises. If you say what you mean, and mean what you say, you will most probably have better luck.
