One 'L' of a Puzzle

One 'L' of a Puzzle

It's important to see the wood for the trees. One simple thing can actually be transformed into another with a bit of imagination. Try this out with nothing more than a paper napkin and some scissors. A marker pen will also help.

Guide lines
Ready, Steady, Go!

Hand someone the paper napkin.

You:

Napkins are obviously good to wipe sauce off your face, but they also make a fun puzzle to solve… want to try it?

Lend me your ears

Use the scissors to cut the napkin into an L, as seen in the photos.

You:

Your challenge is to cut up the big L-shape napkin to make four smaller but identical versions of the big L-shape.

You:

All four of the final L’s have to be the same size and shape - no wasted pieces. Can you do it?

Seal the Deal and Reveal

If they don’t figure out the solution with the marker, reveal it to them as per the photos. Then cut away to reveal the identical L’s.

Some extra lines you can try

  • That’s one ‘ell of a puzzle.
  • Napkins, not just for a pretty face.
  • You don’t need expensive things to entertain you, just a napkin.
Alternative ending

Make the task even harder by not introducing the marker pen. They’ll now have to figure out the blueprint lines in their head.

Is this the inspiration for the four L’s?

Now that you mention it… it could now be the 5 L's.

Does this always make an L of an impression?

That is an 'elluva' question.

Do napkins go with you everywhere?

Wherever there are people there should be napkins.
