Tomato Cocktail

Tomato Cocktail

You’ve been taught not to play with your food, but sometimes that’s exactly what’s required to solve a puzzle. Try this out with a cherry tomato, a wine glass and a smaller regular glass.

Guide lines
Ready, Steady, Go!

Prep your hardware - the two glasses and tomato and call someone over.

Lend me your ears

Without touching this tomato, can you transfer it into one of the glasses without holding any glass sideways and without ever touching the tomato?

Give them time to figure it out. It might involve them trying to awkwardly roll the tomato into the glass.

Seal the Deal and Reveal

Let me reveal a more elegant solution.

Place the wine glass upside down over the tomato. Start to rotate the glass in a circular motion, until the tomato starts to spin inside the lip of the glass.

While the tomato is spinning, it can’t fall down. Place it over the other glass and stop rotating.

The tomato will fall into the smaller glass.

Some extra lines you can try

  • You say tomato, I say tomato… in a glass.
  • If you spin it fast enough, you get a delicious tomato smoothie.
  • Cocktails anyone?
Alternative ending

Try a small ball or some type of fruit. What other objects could replace the tomato? Get creative with alternative options to spin in the glass.

Anticipated responses and retorts

Is this your spinning class?

Yes, and you need to practice.

Is a tomato really a fruit?

If you spin it long enough it can become a fruit salad, or a chilled soup.

Can you mix a Martini like that?

If you replace the tomato with an olive, then maybe.
