Capturing imagination is a great icebreaker, and it’s easily done with a few household items. Try this out on young and old alike. You’ll need nothing more than a napkin, preferably made of cloth, and a fork.

Guide lines
Ready, Steady, Go!

Place the fork behind the napkin - don’t reveal the fork at all.

Did you feel that? Seems like there’s a bit of a breeze in here…

Lend me your ears

Lift the napkin to chest height, fork still hidden from sight.

Seriously, you could almost say it’s windy in here…

Seal the Deal and Reveal

With thumb control over the fork, hidden behind the napkin, begin tapping on the centre of the hanging napkin with the fork. It will look as if an invisible force is tapping the fabric upwards.

That’s more than a breeze, that’s a ghost.

Give a few more taps against the cloth, adding more power and height to the taps. Look a little uncertain as to how this is happening.

Some extra lines you can try

  • Don’t worry, I think it’s just Casper the friendly ghost.
  • Weird things happen when you’re around.
  • It’s like the wizard of Oz behind the curtain.
Alternative ending

Try the same technique, but using a wine cork or something bigger stuck to the fork - like a muffin - for maximum napkin jumping effect.

Anticipated responses and retorts

Is that a haunted napkin?

Yes, but in a good way.

Can you move things with your mind?

Only if they are covered by a napkin…

What is the secret?

Fork off… I mean, don’t let the fork slip.
